Why TikTok Shop

Should you be on TikTok Shop?

Plenty of brands shouldn't. Run the 2-minute check below and it'll tell you which one you are, using your own margin. Underneath it are the 25 questions founders actually ask me before they open a shop, answered with numbers from the ones we run.

    The short answer

We turn brands down for this channel. Worth figuring out which side you're on before you read anything else.

    Open a shop if
    • Your product does something visible in 15 seconds. It changes something, tastes like something, or fixes something on camera.
    • You can give up 20% to 30% of the sale price to fees and commission and still be happy with what’s left.
    • You can put inventory aside for seeding without it hurting.
    • Someone on your side can approve a creator and get a sample shipped inside 48 hours.
    Don't bother if
    • Your product needs a paragraph of explanation before anyone gets it.
    • Your AOV is under $15 and your margin is thin. The fees will eat the whole thing.
    • You need every sale attributed cleanly before you’ll act on it. This channel won’t give you that.
    • You want something you can set up once and leave alone.

    Question 1 of 10
    Where you are

Have you run a TikTok Shop before?

    The case for it

The only feed with a checkout built in.

Every other channel rents you attention and then sends it somewhere else to buy. Three things make this one different and none of them are about going viral.

    01

    The buyers are already there

The biggest US age group on the platform is 25 to 34, at 36.5M monthly visitors. That’s ahead of 18 to 24 at 24.5M. The people with money to spend outnumber the teenagers.

    02

Discovery and checkout are the same scroll

47% of 25 to 44 year olds buy something they first heard about on the platform. Shop takes out the click over to your site, which is where social traffic has always died.

The sales team works on commission

Affiliates make the content and get paid when it sells. On the shops we run, 92% of GMV comes from affiliate video. That’s content you didn’t produce and didn’t pay for up front.

    Founder questions

    What founders actually ask

25 questions, grouped by what's actually blocking the decision. I haven't edited any of them into a friendlier version.

    The money

    Does it actually make margin?

GMV is the number agencies quote you. Contribution margin is the number that pays you.

    The operation

What does it actually take to run?

The stuff nobody answers on a sales call. These numbers come from one live shop over 30 days.

    The brand

What do I give up in control?

For brands with retail partners, a MAP policy, and something to lose.

    The receipts

    I've heard this pitch before.

For the founder who already opened a shop, paid someone to run it, and got nothing.

    The unflattering table

Most of it doesn't work. That's the job.

One live shop, 30 days, start to finish. We publish it because that drop-off is the whole reason this channel needs managing instead of automating.

That lime sliver is the whole business. Finding it is the job.

106 creators out of 31,174 contacted actually drove sales. Handled right, those 106 put up +526% GMV month over month.

GMV managed across brands, at peak

GMV is gross. TikTok Shop doesn't report refunds inside it, so we label it that way here and on your dashboard.

    Still not sure?

Send me your product and your margin. I'll tell you whether this channel clears your floor, what the seeding actually costs you, and where a program like yours usually leaks. If the answer is don't bother, that's the answer you'll get.
